As standard we start on trauma first aid safety comes first. This course is provided by Marcus Davies he is very professional and gives a real life experience which is exactly what is needed.

Once this is completed our new tree surgeons learn chainsaw maintenance which is a constant on the job demand. Abraham Lincoln had a great saying which i apply to our work. “If I have 6 hours to chop a tree down I will spend four of them to sharpening my axe.”

The next stage for the budding tree surgeons are to learn the in’s and out’s of small tree felling. Then the tree surgeon needs to grapple with tree climbing and aerial rescue and using a chainsaw in a tree.

MY JOURNEY TO BEING A TREE SURGEON

As a child I grew up in a plant nursey. My parents grew trees and sold them wholesale. So I learned how propagate them, and the practicalities of giving the trees the best start. I trained at Myerscough college which is now regarded as the best in the country. I passed my HND in Horticulture which has given me a great background. 

I initially worked as a gardener which gradually developed into tree surgery. So at that stage obviously I had to get properly trained with other tree surgeons. Myerscough offer many courses for tree surgeons which are accredited either by the National Proficiency testing council or Lantra. Since then we have gradually expanded our expertise having obtained every qualification there is.

Last year we finally became Arb Approved contractors with the Arboricultural Association it is the highest accolade tree surgeons can achieve.. This was a massive undertaking. See the link to see our listing.

Then I qualified as  a professional tree inspector accredited by LANTRA. So another service we can offer with confidence are tree surveys. Surveys are great for schools, hospitals, estates and so on. They take the guess work out and provide a survey, report, site map with location and identification of the trees. It also provides a list of recommendations and a time schedule and a means of prioritising the work in question. The report puts you in an informed position so you can plan out your work and budget with confidence.
